Teaching Kids to Embrace Kindness All Year Round
Each November, National Kindness Day gives us a special reason to pause and celebrate the power of kindness. For families, it’s an opportunity to help children embrace kindness as a lifelong habit, one small act at a time.
As parents and caregivers, we play an essential role in modelling kindness. Our children are like mirrors, often reflecting the words, actions, and attitudes they see in us. By showing kindness in our daily lives, we give them the tools to build compassion, empathy, and understanding as they grow.
Here are a few simple ways to celebrate National Kindness Day as a family and keep kindness in focus all year:
-
Start a Kindness Jar: Encourage your child to write or draw acts of kindness they’ve seen or experienced, adding to the jar throughout the year. When it’s full, look back at these moments of kindness and share gratitude as a family.
-
Do Something Kind Together: It could be as simple as baking treats for neighbours, donating gently-used toys, or helping a friend. Children feel empowered when they’re part of kind acts and see the joy they can bring to others.
-
Create a Kind Words Challenge: Spend the day sharing kind words with friends, family, and each other. It's a simple way to remind everyone that kindness often starts with our words.
